P2. Social Media Strategy Plan

Step One: Reading About Social Media
It’s impossible to find the “perfect” article for you to read about social media. The problem is – the “perfect” article depends on what you’re interested in. There’s so much good stuff out there – I want you to find your own article. Here’s what you’re going to do:

  1. Do Google search for any articles/videos/resources about social media to get some idea about what/how social media tools are used in your target grade level and/or subject area to support communication and collaboration. Find 1 article, video, or resource.
  2. Tweet the example/resource to #P2_SocialMedia with information of “learner grade level, subject area, learning activity, social media tool, and link”. For example, “Undergraduates, N/A, Discussion, Twitter, http://youtu.be/t1szz0KRzh0
  3. Add a new page called “Social Media Strategy Plan” on your portfolio
  4. Link to the article you found, and write 2 paragraphs about what this article means to you, how it informs your understanding of social media, and what is in the article that you will use in your profession.

Step Two: Exploring Social Media
There are many different social media tools – and to have a social media identity, you don’t need to actively use all of them. I’ve created a list of social media tools – you will need to choose 1 tool to begin to create your social media identity. If you have another social media tool you’d like to use and it isn’t listed here – feel free to include it.

  • Google+
  • FourSquare
  • Instagram

Step Three: Building a Social Media Strategy 
Think about how you might use these tools in your profession. On your “Social Media” page, set some goals for your identity and a learning activity to achieve those goals. These should be realistic goals and should be very specific.

Here’s an example of goal-setting and learning activities:

  • Build a professional Facebook page for high school history class
    • Learner: High school students
    • Subject: History
    • Tool: Facebook
    • Goal: To understand Magellan’s voyage
    • Learning activities:
      • 5 groups of 4 students
      • Each group will be assigned from year 1518 to 1522
      • Add major events to the Facebook page using the timeline function
      • Insert related images if any
      • Write detailed descriptions about the event
      • Add comments to other groups’ work to ask clarification/correction

Step Four: Creating an example page
Please create a professional account for your social media strategy plan, and build your board/page/homepage.. which can show the expected result of your plan. For example, as you can see in this Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/MagellansVoyage Your expected result page don’t need to show completion and/or perfection.

Examples from previous years are available, but do not rely too much on them. Our project is somewhat revised. We don’t read 2 resources, and we don’t work on 3 tools.
